Does FocusCraft always need to be calculating?

Hi, me again!

I just checked a shoot and APT had hung. On trying to restart it, everything seemed fine but as soon as I tried running the autofocus routine it would hang again. In the end I parked the scope, warmed up the camera, restarted the machine and it's ok again now.

I haven't exported the log yet, but it did occur to me that I'd switched off FocusCraft, simply because it takes several seconds to recalculate between each sub which, when taking 60s subs as I am tonight, is a lot of wasted time. I'd monitored it before I went to bed, and it seemed to be fine - a lot less time between each sub, and when autofocus was called, it seemed to work. So, I figured it calls FocusCraft as and when needed, but I could have been wrong.

I also know I could try and get InvPower to work but I haven't had much success with that so far, so I'm still using HFD.

So, when using HFD, does FocusCraft always have to be set to calculate in the background? If so, could this be changed so that it can be switched off, save time between subs, and just be called when needed? Or, if that's how it behaves anyway, I guess I need to export the log and see what could have happened here?

Just read the documentation and I was right it seems - FocusCraft calculation can be switched off.

So, something else seems to have gone wrong during the AutoFocus routine.

Here's the part of the log that seems to indicate it bombs out at AutoFocus, perhaps when the filter wheel is being called? It seems to be just before every 'Start 3.98.1' comment, which is the APT restart. I did a few test shots with the camera to make sure it was actually working, restarted APT etc, but every time I started AutoFocus, whether manually or in a plan, it froze - the sort of freeze where after a few seconds the screen turns white. The only fix was to restart the laptop.

Happy to provide the full log if someone fancies helping out here. This hasn't happened before so it could be 'one of those things' but then again this is only my fifth shoot with this camera (which I'm running with the native ZWO drivers, not ASCOM). I've checked the USB lead between the focus wheel and camera, and reduced the USB speed setting to 40%. I'll be doing another run tonight and keeping an eye on things. If it happens again I'll replace the cable, and if it happens again then I've got a problem!

Hi Brendan,

Yes, you can uncheck FocusCraft calculation and APT will force that only when Auto Focus Aid is working. If the calculation takes too long you can try to change the Star Detection Threshold and the Star Size in FocusCraft->Settings to values that give good number of stars but not too big - under 100 is more than enough.

Looking on the log parts it looks like the problem could be happening during the focuser move. What focuser do you use and is its driver latest version?

I agree, the problem did seem to be the focuser move. I've since had no problems with it so it could have been a one-off. It's the Sky-Watcher autofocus with the HitecAstro DC Focus and as far as I'm aware I have the latest drivers, but it's a good call to double-check. Fingers crossed it doesn't happen again.

I do not know if this is related, but a while ago I mentioned that my screen was blanking when calling autofocus with focuscraft. I thought it was the video RAM but it is still doing it.

I use a HitecAstro Focusmaster V1 and according to Hitecastro it is to do with communication of the focusser and is not critical.

"- this is normal behaviour as the operation isn't asynchronous - the software waits for a response back from the hardware that the move is finished and depending on the application this can cause it to pause waiting for this response. This is more apparent on longer moves where as a shorter move should complete more quickly and return back to the software which releases the pause."

That would certainly fit with my symptoms as it is more noticeable at the start when the focusser is moved the largest distance.

I am using 3.98.1, but it was the same in the earlier versions.

Does the image file size have an effect as I am using a QHY268C and each frame is 51mb.

I have only used HFD so far as I cannot get any usable results from Invpower.

How many stars it usually detects? If is more that 100-200 it is worth trying to increase the star size and the star detection threshold.

I reaiise that I did not have the option to save the focusing images ticked. I have ticked it now but the weather does not look good for the next few days.

Certainly I have over 200 stars so I will make the changes you suggest and see what happens.
